Administrative Access and Traffic Vulnerabilities in Ebyte NE2-D11 Gateways

Source context: this article examines information published by the source on August 25, 2026. This site’s publication date is shown separately. Check the latest vendor guidance before acting.

What the vulnerability is

CISA has identified a series of vulnerabilities in the Ebyte NE2-D11 gateway that primarily impact the device’s web management interface and its handling of data transmission. These flaws include missing authentication for critical functions (CVE-2026-73125), client-side authentication bypasses (CVE-2026-71187), and improper authorization checks on configuration endpoints (CVE-2026-75813).

Additionally, the device suffers from significant data exposure risks. Sensitive information, including administrative credentials and MQTT control traffic, is transmitted in cleartext (CVE-2026-73809, CVE-2026-69658). Other identified issues include susceptibility to Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF), a lack of rate limiting on authentication attempts, and improper protection of session tokens.

Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to gain unauthorized administrative access, modify device configurations, disclose sensitive information, or disrupt the operation of the gateway.

Exposure and applicability

These vulnerabilities specifically affect the Ebyte NE2-D11 gateway running firmware version FW-9167-0-11.

This equipment is utilized globally, with particular relevance to the Energy and Critical Manufacturing sectors. The risk is highest for deployments where the gateway’s management interface or MQTT traffic is accessible over a network shared with untrusted users or connected directly to the internet.

Remediation priorities

As of August 25, 2026, Ebyte has acknowledged the vulnerabilities and indicated that a patch was under development; however, no patch is currently available, and the vendor has not responded to subsequent coordination requests.

In the absence of a firmware update, our analysis suggests the following prioritized defensive measures:

  1. Network Isolation: Immediately isolate affected gateways from business networks and ensure they are not reachable via the public internet. Placing these devices behind industrial firewalls is a primary priority to prevent remote exploitation of authentication bypasses.
  2. Secure Remote Access: If remote management is required, utilize a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encapsulate traffic. This helps mitigate the risk posed by cleartext transmission of credentials and MQTT traffic.
  3. Access Control Review: Restrict network-level access to the web management interface to a limited number of authorized engineering workstations to reduce the surface area for CSRF and session hijacking attacks.

How to validate remediation

Because no patch exists, validation cannot be performed via version checking. Instead, asset owners should verify the effectiveness of compensating controls:

  • Connectivity Testing: Use network mapping or firewall logs to confirm that the management interface is unreachable from unauthorized network segments (e.g., the corporate LAN or external WAN).
  • Traffic Analysis: In a non-production environment, use authorized packet capture tools to verify that MQTT traffic and management sessions are encapsulated within an encrypted tunnel (such as a VPN) rather than traversing the rest of the network in cleartext.

Limits and open questions

There is currently no timeline for the release of a formal patch from Ebyte. Until a verified update is provided, users remain exposed to these vulnerabilities if their network perimeter is breached. Furthermore, because MQTT traffic is transmitted in cleartext by design in this firmware version, the risk of data interception remains high unless external encryption (like a VPN or encrypted tunnel) is implemented at the network layer.
